Our School Year Cycle

Do you ever wonder how homeschooler plan their school year?

Many simply follow the same schedule as public school, which when starting out seems to be the easiest approach.

Some school year round.

We opt for a 9 weeks on, 2 weeks off routine.

We begin the first part of August,
which is a month before our public school peers.
By doing this, we land on 2 weeks off for our 2nd quarter right at Christmas time.

We do 4 quarters.  Which means our last quarter lands at State testing time at the end of May,
which is perfect for us.  After all, who wants to finish school in June after already taking your final test for the year?

Obviously, we take 8 weeks off for summer.
Basically that is June and July.
This truly has worked best for us.  What works for you?

  1. I think I need to work on a schedule like this one. I have thought about it for years but haven’t changed my program yet. With pregnancies and nursing, I usually plan the year around the birth date so I can take 6 weeks off after the baby is born. I use to take Fridays off every week but I haven’t done that in a couple years. Thanks for the idea. I will get on planning.
